What time does the Super Bowl start tomorrow, what TV channel is it on and how can the Carolina Panthers be stopped?

Everything you need to know about Super Bowl 50 between Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers, the biggest NFL game of the year

When is Super Bowl 50?

It's on Sunday February 7th and kicks off at 15.30 Pacific time.

What time is that in the UK?

It's a somewhat antisocial 23.30 start for anyone watching in the famous old timezone of GMT. Best book Monday the 8th off work now.

Where is Super Bowl 50 being played?

At Levi's Stadium, the home of the San Francisco 49ers, which looks like this:

Capacity is 75,000 for the Super Bowl, up from 68,500 for normal NFL games. It's the first time the stadium has hosted American Football's biggest game, which isn't all that surprising given that it only opened in 2014.

What TV channel is it on?

It's being televised on the BBC, for the first time since 2008. The game is being shown on BBC Two, and coverage begins at 22:50.

Who is playing in it?

Who's going to win?

Theoretically, it should be straightforward assignment for the Carolina Panthers. They ended the regular season with comfortably the best overall record, only losing one game out of 16.

Cam Newton is a machine at quarterback, and the ease with which they dispensed with the accomplished Arizona Cardinals in the NFC championship game suggests they're capable of going all the way.

They'd beaten the Patriots once already there this season. But their league-leading defence looked immense, and should present some questions for the Panthers.
It's just as likely the Newton's younger team blaze through the Broncos, as they have more or less every other opponent this season.
What do you think?

Peyton Manning's final game may be Super Bowl 50 against the Carolina Panthers
The Broncos have been far less convincing this season, especially at quarterback where Peyton Manning briefly became a backup to Brock Osweiller through a combination of loss of form and injury.
But the 39-year-old Manning looked back to something approaching his best when leading his team to victory against the New England Patriots.
The suspicion is the Broncos were aided in that game by the altitude of their Mile High Stadium which is, believe it or not, a mile above sea level.

Who's performing in the half-time show?

It's the band Coldplay. Please, do try to control yourself. Will they join the elite list of best ever Super Bowl half-time shows? Only time will tell, but they'll have to go some to better Katy Perry's show last year, and her magnificent dancing sharks. Especially the one on the left:

How did we get here?

Twenty teams from the 32 team NFL were eliminated at of the end of the regular (it's American for "normal") season on 3 January.
After the wild card round we also waved goodbye to the Houston Texans, Cincinnati Bengals, Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins.
The divisional round put paid to the Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Then we waved goodbye to the Patriots and Cardinals in the AFC and NFC championship games. This picture summarises the situation nicely:

How do the playoffs work?

They're quite simple.
The NFL is divided into two conferences: The NFC and AFC. Every conference comprises four four-team regional divisions. The winner of each division is guaranteed a playoff spot, as well as the two teams from each conference with the next-best overall records.
The two teams from each conference with the best records are seeded one and two, and enjoy a first-round bye and get to play at their own stadium in the second round of the play-offs, what's known as the Divisional Round.
The remaining eight teams duke it out in the first round, aka the Wild Card round, which occured on the weekend of Saturday 9 January. The teams with the best records had homefield advantage. Obviously.
With eight reduced to four, then joined by the four teams with a bye, we're on to the aforementioned divisional round, which took place on the weekend of 16/17 January.
Next it's the championship games, both happened on Sunday 24 February, for the NFC and AFC titles. Again, they were hosted by the teams with the best records.
The winners of those proceed to the inter-conference Super Bowl.
It's actually not that simple, is it?
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr meets Snoop Dogg, obviously

What are the odds?

Just after the championship games, they are as follows:
Carolina Panthers 5/9
Denver Broncos 6/4

Why isn't it called Super Bowl L?

We know, right? Lovely roman numerals: What happened to you?
This, the 50th incarnation of the Super Bowl, is the first to ditch the tradtional Roman system in 45 years and use the far less exciting numbers we use for every day activities like counting and giving our friends marks out of 100.
Apparently it's because "L" (Roman for "50", Latin rookies) isn't visually pleasing. But don't worry, we'll be back on track in 2017 for Super Bowl LI in Houston.

How Many Times Have The Carolina Panthers Been To The Super Bowl? A Playoff History For The NFL Franchise

It's nearly time for the Carolina Panthers to take on the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50, the big game scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 7. The Panthers are a relatively new franchise, and while it won't be its first appearance in the championship game, the team's Super Bowl history is limited. Carolina has played in the big game just once, and it ended in heartbreak.
North Carolina was awarded an expansion franchise by the NFL Oct. 26, 1993, and played its first season in 1995, finishing with a middling 7-9 record. The following season the team had a great second year in the NFL, finishing the regular season 12-4 and advancing to the NFC Championship game. The season came to a close after the squad lost to the eventual champion Green Bay Packers 30-13.
The next six seasons brought a range of results that teetered between mediocre and awful. The team missed the playoffs each season, never finished above a .500 winning percentage and won just a single game in 2001. The season after going 1-15, the Panthers rebounded to go 7-9, but still missed the playoffs.

Then came the 2003-2004 season, which, until this year, proved to be Carolina's best. Led by quarterback Jake Delhomme in his first year as an NFL starter, the Panthers went 11-5. They advanced to the Super Bowl by beating the Philadelphia Eagles 14-3 in the NFC Championship Game. The Super Bowl brought heartache, however. They took on the New England Patriots and entered the game as heavy underdogs. But the matchup turned into a thriller. It took a last-minute drive led by quarterback Tom Brady and a 41-yard field goal from kicker Adam Vinatieri with four seconds remaining for the Patriots to outlast Carolina 32-29.
The Panthers would make it back to the conference championship in the 2005-2006 season, but would never again make it to the Super Bowl until this season, made possible with last Sunday's 49-15 blowout of the Arizona Cardinals. The Panthers, led by presumptive MVP quarterback Cam Newton, hope for a better result this season than they had when Delhomme's Panthers fell to the Patriots. Likely boosting the hopes of Carolina fans, Delhomme himself said the 2015 squad would beat his team that was three points from winning it all. He marveled at the fact that the Panthers went 15-1 in the regular season and made short work of a talented Cardinals team in their latest matchup.
"This team right now looks like they're on a different planet," Delhomme said to ESPN.

Newton's time is now for Carolina

SAN FRANCISCO
 • He is revered by teammates, respected by opponents. Some would deny him his youthful exuberance. His swagger, after all, can be over the top.
But it’s clear this is Cam Newton’s time. He is exploding onto the scene as one of the sports world’s most captivating personalities, and bringing the Carolina Panthers along for the ride.
For many, Denver’s Peyton Manning is the sentimental choice to win Super Bowl 50. But the brash, young quarterback on the other sideline looks every bit like the future of the game.
“Cam Newton will be named the MVP, and that’s who you are facing in the Super Bowl,” said Rams Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk, framing the challenge facing Manning.
“It’s not like it’s Rex Grossman. This is Cam Newton. And Cam has earned everything that he has gotten.
“We have scrutinized him from dancing, to press conference etiquette, to attire. We’ve picked him apart. And right now he stands one game away, one man away, from winning what this league is all about. The Super Bowl.”

Newton arrived here for Super Bowl 50, and social media exploded because he was wearing a gold zebra-striped pair of Versace pants, priced at $849.
He did a fashion 180 at his Tuesday media session — wearing a plain white T — and some criticized him for not dressing up. On Thursday, his final media obligation of the week, he was asked why he was wearing socks with his sandals.
Newton turned the tables on his inquisitor.
“Why are you wearing jeans with shoes?” Newton replied. “It’s just comfort. I mean we’re still at our team hotel, so it just gives you guys something else to talk about, you know?”
Newton normally craves attention like a moth craves light. He oozes charisma. For him, it’s never a case of a little “dab” will do you. He enjoys the spotlight, and gets it.
Snoop Dogg shows up to interview him. Reporters from Hungary, Japan, Mexico — you name it — jockey for a sound bite.

He can be funny, as in: “I’m trilingual myself. I know how to speak Spanish, English obviously — and I speak pretty good Ebonics.”
But he can also stir the pot. As in: “I’m a African-American quarterback and that scares people.”
As Super Bowl week progressed, Newton declined to engage in any further discussion on race and quarterbacks.
“I don’t even want to touch on the topic of black quarterback, because I think this game is bigger than black, white, or even green,” Newton said Tuesday. “So I think we limit ourselves when we label ourselves just black, this, that, and the third.”
A reporter persisted on the subject, asking Newton about the stereotype of the black quarterback as being unable to play in the pocket.
“I think we shattered that a long time ago,” Newton replied.
And then came a question on whether the stereotyping of black quarterbacks was an issue.
Unruffled, Newton replied: “It’s not an issue. It’s an issue for you.”
To some, the entire issue of Newton’s cocky in-game celebrations and the whole notion — as he puts it — of being the “scary African-American quarterback” is overblown and an over-worn theme.
But if there’s anyone that should be “scared” of Newton, it’s the AFC champion Denver Broncos. So far no one’s discovered a Kryptonite for the man who plays like Superman. The Broncos must figure out a way to defend his laser-like passes, keep him from breaking contain on the pass rush, and try to bring down his 6-foot-5, 245-pound frame in short yardage.
But you know what? Even the opposition likes him.
“That’s my favorite quarterback,” Denver linebacker Von Miller said. “I really do like everything about him. He shows a lot of emotion. You can see the way his teammates react to him, that everybody loves him. I just think he’s great. He’s a great quarterback, and he’s the future of the sport.”
Much to the delight of Charlotte-area youth, who get a football after each touchdown these days, Newton has been a TD machine for the 17-1 Panthers. During the regular season, he threw for 35 TDs and scored 10 more rushing. In two playoff contests leading up to Sunday’s Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium, Newton has accounted for five more — three by air and two by land.
Beyond the production and the raw numbers is the leadership he provides on and away from the field.
“Love him,” said Carolina cornerback Cortland Finnegan, the former Ram. “What I love about him most is there’ll be a serious moment, and he’ll find a way to lighten the mood.
“And he’ll demand so much respect, and he’ll go out there and make a play. There’s nothing that he hasn’t been able to do. He’s got my MVP vote, and that’s because not only what he does on the field but what he does off the field.
“What he does off the field is not very much covered, but I can tell you that he’s always been about the team. And that’s one of the things that you can’t put into words.”
At just 26 years old, and five years into his NFL career, Newton probably hasn’t even hit his prime. But in order to make it to the pantheon of NFL quarterbacks, it helps immensely to win a Super Bowl. Or two.
As Carolina coach Ron Rivera says, it’s Newton’s time. He’s won a junior college championship. An NCAA championship. Next up: the Lombardi Trophy.
“Most certainly, I think it’s his moment,” Rivera said. “As well as it’s our moment. I think having been in the national championship game (for Auburn), it’s kind of helped him in terms of preparation for the onslaught of attention we have gotten as a football team and he’s gotten as an individual.”
But as Super Bowl week wore on, even Newton seemed to tire of all the questions. His charisma tank was running low.
He was very short with some answers. On several occasions, he prefaced an answer by saying he’s addressed the question a thousand times. At Wednesday’s session, he began the proceedings by saying: “Nothing has changed since 24 hours (ago),” and repeated those words Thursday.
But the talking is over. On Sunday, he gets to do what he does best: play football. And this time, it’s in front of the entire football world.

Super Bowl 50 halftime show : TV schedule and performers

The Super Bowl halftime show is, at this point, nearly as big as the Super Bowl itself. This year, the NFL is rolling out the biggest names it can find for the big game's 50th halftime show, with Coldplay, Beyonce and Bruno Mars scheduled to perform.
Coldplay is making its first appearance at the Super Bowl halftime show. Originally formed in 1996, the band has released seven albums over its career, winning seven Grammy awards. Coldplay's 2008 album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, was named Best Rock Album of the Year, while their 2004 single "Clocks" won Record of the Year.

The band's latest album, A Head Full of Dreams, was released on Dec. 4, 2015. Coldplay will launch a U.S. tour in support of the album this summer, which frontman Chris Martin described as "a record to be performed live." This will be Coldplay's first tour since their Mylo Xylototour, which commenced in 2011 and wrapped up in 2012.
Joining Coldplay on stage is R&B icon Beyonce, who at this point needs no introduction. Super Bowl 50 will represent Beyonce's fourth halftime show appearance. She previously performed at Super Bowl 47 as the headliner, and her performance is generally regarded as one of the best halftime shows of the 21st century.

One of the highlights of that show was the brief reunion of Destiny's Child, the group that originally shot Beyonce to stardom. Fans will also remember that the lights in the Mercedes Benz Super Dome went out shortly after Beyonce finished performing, and they remained out long enough to disrupt the game.
Beyonce, though uncredited for the contribution, is featured on Coldplay's song "Hymn for the Weekend" from A Head Full of Dreams. She also has a cameo appearance in the video for the song, which was shot in Mumbai, India.
The third confirmed guest is Bruno Mars, who performed at Super Bowl 48. Mars has built an impressive resume of his own, winning two Grammy awards in his career. He had another dominant year in 2015, with single "Uptown Funk" topping the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 consecutive weeks.

As the headliner for the Super Bowl 48 halftime show, Mars drew 115 million viewers, second only to the Super Bowl 49 halftime show featuring Katy Perry with 121 million viewers. When Mars performed at Super Bowl 48, he was joined by his own band, The Hooligans, as well as The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
In addition to those three names, we can probably expect one or more "surprise" guest stars. Last year, Missy Elliott made a surprising appearance at the halftime show, performing renditions of her hit singles "Get Ur Freak On" and "Work It" alongside Katy Perry.
One name that has been speculated about is Beyonce's husband, rapper Jay-Z, who collaborated with Coldplay on the song "Lost!" from the 2008 EP Prospekt's March. Pop artist Rihanna, who also performed a duet with Chris Martin on the track "Princess of China" from Mylo Xyloto, could also be a possibility to join the band on stage.
Until the halftime show begins, however, it's anyone's guess as to who may pop up to jam alongside Coldplay.

Super Bowl 50: Predictions for Panthers vs. Broncos Stats, Final Score and MVP

Bob Leverone/Associated Press

Quarterback Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers will win Super Bowl 50 by a score of 30-23, but the likely MVP of the 2015 season won't get the same award for the big game.
The 26-year-old signal-caller will produce a solid performance on Sunday while leading his team on a couple of scoring drives against a nasty Denver Broncos defense, but it will be a member of the Panthers' underrated defense who takes Super Bowl MVP.
Count on that guy being linebacker Luke Kuechly. Per NFL Network on Twitter, Kuechly was asked by a fan what he will do if he wins the Super Bowl. Here's his response:

Get your FREE NFL Jersey

He'll have to come up with something a little more specific considering his team will be the victor come Sunday.
All season long Kuechly has been an impact player from his linebacker spot. He's shown a nose for the ball and excellent leadership on his unit. According to Pro Football Focus, no linebacker was better against the run in the NFL in 2015:

He wasn't bad against the pass either.
The 24-year-old had four interceptions in the regular season and collected two more in the playoffs. He's scored a total of three times in the regular season and the postseason combined. Look for him to find paydirt again after he picks off a pass from Denver quarterback Peyton Manning.
Since we're making bold and specific predictions, let's also say Kuechly will force or recover a fumble at a crucial point in the game that helps set up a short field for Newton and the offense. When it's over, this stat line for the Panthers linebacker will earn him Super Bowl MVP honors:

Predicted Super Bowl 50 Stats for Luke Kuechly
Tackles Tackles for Loss    Sacks   INT  Forced Fumbles Fumble Recoveries TDs
14 4 0     1         1    0 1
Predictions by Mazique

Let's not leave out Newton. He'll obviously be a key player in the Panthers' Super Bowl victory. Here are his predicted statistics:

Predicted Super Bowl 50 Stats for Cam Newton
Completions Attempts Passing Yards Passing TDs INT Rushing Yards Rushing TDs
21 30 215 1 1 50 1
Predictions by Mazique

The running game will be a major part of the Panthers' success. It's the element the New England Patriots were unable to establish when they lost to the Broncos in the AFC Championship Game. Led by running back Jonathan Stewart's workmanlike performance, Carolina will establish an effective ground game:

Predicted Super Bowl 50 Stats for Jonathan Stewart
Rushes Rushing Yards TDs Fumbles
21 80 0 0
Predictions by Mazique

The Panthers' top receiver should come as no surprise. Teams have tried to take tight end Greg Olsen away all season, but it hasn't worked. Olsen won't have a humongous game, but he'll be the Panthers' top receiving threat, just as he was all season long:

Predicted Super Bowl 50 Stats for Greg Olsen
Receptions Targets Receiving Yards Receiving TDs
7 11 82 1
Predictions by Mazique

Super Bowl Insanity: 6 Crazy Halftime Collaborations

Regardless of whether the Panthers or the Broncos hoist the Lombardi Trophy following Super Bowl 50, the real winner this Sunday is bound to be Coldplay. Chris Martin and Co. are rocking the halftime show, and word on the street is that they’re bringing an eclectic group of past headliners -- including Beyonce, (possibly) Bruno Mars and perhaps some other special guests -- along for the wild ride.

This isn’t the first time the Super Bowl has played host to unlikely musical pairings, and if past years are any indication, the blending of musical styles will make perfect sense (more or less) once the performers hit the 50-yard line. Here are six of the strangest musical pairings in Super Bowl history. On paper, they looked iffy -- but they all scored major points on game day.

Super Bowl
XLIX: Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz & Missy Elliott

Get your FREE NFL Jersey

In 2015, following in the footsteps of platinum pop divas Madonna (2012) and Beyonce (2014), Katy Perry brought a bit of girl power to Super Bowl Sunday with a larger-than-life show that was watched by more eyeballs than the game itself. In 2015, after belting her own monster hits like “Roar” and “Dark Horse,” Perry sang with rocker Lenny Kravitz on “I Kissed a Girl.” But the real showstopper came when Katy passed the mic to long-lost hip-hop visionary Missy Elliott, who re-emerged on the scene and outshone even Left Shark with a medley of “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It” and “Lose Control.”

Super Bowl
XLVIII: Bruno Mars & Red Hot Chili Peppers

Get your FREE NFL Jersey

The connecting factor here was funk. Bruno Mars aspires to be a modern-day James Brown. The Red Hot Chili Peppers worship at the altar of Parliament-Funkadelic and even tapped George Clinton to produce their album Freaky Styley, which dropped in 1985 -- the same year Mars was born. Following their performance of “Give It Away,” everyone who blasted the Chilis for miming along to a pre-recorded backing track totally missed the point. Our hats were off to the seasoned rockers just for keeping the pace with a showbiz dynamo more than two decades their junior.

Super Bowl XXXV: Aerosmith, *NSYNC, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige & Nelly

Get your FREE NFL Jersey

One of the smartest things Aerosmith ever did was team up with Run-DMC for “Walk This Way,” the 1986 hit that proved rappers and rockers could party together. Fifteen years later, the song still had the power to unite “the bad boys from Boston” with unlikely collaborators from diverse genres, including rapper Nelly, R&B queen Mary J. Blige and a bunch of plucky kids for whom the collision of pop, rock and rap was the norm. Those wide-eyed youngsters were *NSYNC and Britney Spears, and the results of the head-scratching union gave both parents and their teenagers something to scream about between touchdowns.

Super Bowl XXXVIII:
Shania Twin, No Doubt & Sting

It’s lucky for Sting that Shania Twain headed to the locker room after performing her two songs -- “Man, I Feel Like a Woman” and “Up.” The 2003 halftime show was all about the ladies, and the British rocker had his hands full just trying to keep up with No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani, who prowled the stage with the pep of a cheerleader and the swagger of a champion. No Doubt’s dominance might make Sting’s guest appearance seem anticlimactic, but once Gwen joined the former Police man on a cover of the group’s 1979 smash “Message In a Bottle,” the collaboration suddenly made sense. Here were two generations of new wave enthusiasts coming together to prove that rock and reggae went as well together as football and buffalo wings.

Super Bowl
XLV: Black Eyed Peas, Usher & Slash

In 2011,
Black Eyed Peas were unstoppable hip-pop cyborgs on a mission to melt all genres into one party-starting sound. They succeeded during halftime of Super Bowl XLV, flipping between their own hits (“I Gotta Feeling,” “Let’s Get It Started,” etc.) and team-ups with R&B superstar Usher (“OMG”) and, most surprisingly, Guns N' Roses guitar god Slash (“Sweet Child o’ Mine”). It was a good night for anyone willing to swallow their cynicism along with their nachos and simply enjoy the show.

Super Bowl XXXVIII: Janet Jackson,  Justin Timberlake, Puff Daddy, Nelly & Kid Rock
Believe it or not, there was more to the bizarre 2004 halftime spectacle than Janet Jackson’s bare breast. In addition to Ms. Jackson’s partner in "wardrobe malfunction"Justin Timberlake, also on the bill that fateful night were Puff DaddyNelly and Kid Rock -- three rather distinct performers whose ability to blend in with pop icons like Janet and Justin was enough to make you feel good about colorblind, anything-goes 21st Century America. Too bad all the good vibes went away in the final seconds of the performance.

He recently joked with late-night talk show host James Corden about what it's like to work with the two music superstars.

"You get summoned to their castle, then you wait for about a week in a small room, where you're just fed very minimally," Martin said. "And if you survive that ... whoever survives that, you get through to the next stage, where you get to play tennis with Jay. And if you beat him twice, you get sent through to meet the rest of Destiny's Child."
